Health Science Department Overview

The department consists of 3 programs: Clinical Lab Science, Exercise Science, and Health Sciences.

The Clinical Laboratory Science program prepares students to become licensed clinical laboratory technologists. Technologists discover the presence or absence of disease in collected samples and provide data that help physicians determine the best treatment for a patient.

The Exercise Science program prepares students for a broad range of occupations that promote health and physical fitness, including strength and conditioning specialists, athletic trainers, and physical therapists. Graduates are skilled in evaluating health behaviors and risk factors, conducting fitness assessments, writing exercise prescriptions, and motivating individuals to modify negative health habits and maintain positive life behaviors for health promotion in apparently healthy adults and those with controlled diseases.

The Health Sciences program prepares students for application to graduate programs in several health professions including Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Physician’s Assistant. The diverse curriculum includes general education requirements, as well as the foundational sciences and psychology courses that are typically prerequisites for application to these graduate programs. This program also offers concentrations in clinical care and health promotion that prepare students for evidence-based practice in these areas.

Message from Interim Dean Nan Hyland

A health care education specialist empowers people and their communities to take control of their health, and adopt healthy lifestyles and behaviors.

This not only improves health and wellness for families and communities but decreases health care costs and risks for chronic diseases. It is not surprising that the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the demand for health education specialists will continue to grow and is projected to be much faster than the average for all occupations
